If your Mercedes-Benz has stored fault code P0716 – Input/Turbine Speed Sensor “A” Circuit Range/Performance, it does not automatically mean that the transmission has failed or that the input speed sensor must be replaced.
P0716 means that the Transmission Control Module, commonly referred to as the TCM, is receiving an input speed signal but has determined that the signal is outside the expected operating range or does not agree with the other information available to it.
This is an important distinction.
With fault code P0717, the input speed signal may be completely absent. With P0716, the sensor may still be reporting a speed, but the TCM considers that speed implausible.
In simple terms, the sensor is still talking—but the transmission control module does not believe what it is saying.

Our first objective is to determine whether the implausible speed reading is being caused by the conductor plate, an electrical problem, incorrect clutch operation, hydraulic pressure loss or an internal transmission fault.
What Does “Range/Performance” Actually Mean?
The word “performance” in the P0716 description can be misleading. It does not simply mean that the vehicle is performing poorly.
It refers to the performance of the input speed sensor circuit and the credibility of the information it is supplying.
The TCM expects the input speed signal to remain within a calculated range under different driving conditions. It verifies that signal by comparing it with other information, including:
Engine speed
Transmission input speed
Internal or intermediate transmission speed
Transmission output speed
Selected gear
Calculated gear ratio
Torque converter operating state
When those values agree, the TCM knows that the transmission is operating as expected.
When the input speed value is present but falls outside the expected relationship, the TCM may store P0716.
For example, the control module may see that third gear is selected and that the output shaft is rotating at a particular speed. From the known gear ratio, it can calculate approximately how fast the transmission input should be rotating.
If the reported input speed is substantially higher, lower or unstable, the numbers no longer make sense. The control module then has to determine whether the sensor information is inaccurate or whether the transmission is genuinely slipping internally.
That is why P0716 requires diagnosis rather than assumptions.
How the Input Speed Sensor Helps Control the Transmission
The input speed sensor, sometimes called the turbine speed sensor, measures the rotational speed entering the transmission after power has passed through the torque converter.
This information is essential to transmission operation.
The TCM uses changes in input or turbine speed to monitor the progress and duration of a gear change. Turbine-speed feedback is an established part of automatic transmission shift control because it allows the control system to observe what is happening during the shift and adjust hydraulic pressure accordingly.
The input speed signal also helps the TCM calculate gear ratios, monitor clutch slip and evaluate torque converter operation.
The transmission does not control a gear change by simply energising a solenoid and hoping the shift happens correctly. It watches the rotating speeds before, during and after the shift.
If a clutch applies correctly, the input, internal and output speeds move into the expected relationship.
If a clutch slips, a hydraulic circuit loses pressure or a speed sensor reports inaccurate information, that relationship changes. P0716 may be stored when the TCM determines that the input speed signal no longer fits the expected operating model.
Why Mercedes P0716 Occurs
P0716 is not a diagnosis of one failed component.
It is the TCM reporting that the input speed information has failed a plausibility test.
The cause may be electronic, electrical, hydraulic or mechanical. Two Mercedes vehicles can therefore store the same P0716 fault code while requiring completely different repairs.
This is why replacing the conductor plate purely because P0716 is present can be an expensive mistake.
The conductor plate is an important suspect, particularly on Mercedes vehicles fitted with the 722.9 7G-Tronic transmission, but it is not the only possible cause.
Mercedes 722.9 Conductor Plate and Speed Sensor Faults
On the Mercedes 722.9 transmission, the relevant speed sensors and transmission electronics are integrated into the conductor plate assembly rather than fitted as simple external sensors.
The conductor plate operates inside the transmission and is exposed to heat, vibration and automatic transmission fluid. Over time, faults within the sensor electronics can cause the input speed value to become inaccurate or unstable.
A conductor plate does not always fail by producing a completely absent signal.
It may continue to report a value that occasionally drops, spikes or disagrees with the other speed sensors. When the value remains present but becomes implausible, the TCM may store a range/performance fault such as P0716 rather than a no-signal fault.
Early 722.9 transmissions became particularly well known for internal speed-sensor and conductor-plate problems, although the transmission and its electronics were revised over time.
However, the presence of P0716 alone is not enough to prove conductor plate failure. The live speed data must be examined to determine what the sensor is actually reporting.
Can Transmission Slip Cause P0716?
Yes, but the relationship needs to be understood correctly.
P0716 can be stored because the input speed sensor is producing inaccurate information. It can also appear when the sensor is reporting correctly but the transmission is not achieving the rotational relationship expected by the TCM.
Possible causes include worn clutch packs, leaking clutch seals, insufficient hydraulic pressure, valve body wear or incorrect clutch application.
During a shift, one clutch element must release while another applies. If the applying clutch cannot hold the required torque, engine and input speed may rise without the corresponding increase in output speed.
This is commonly felt as a shift flare.
From the TCM’s perspective, the calculated gear ratio temporarily becomes incorrect. Depending on the operating conditions and the accompanying faults, this may contribute to a speed-sensor range or performance code.
The important diagnostic question is therefore not simply:
“Is the input speed reading wrong?”
The better question is:
“Is the sensor reporting the wrong speed, or is the transmission genuinely rotating at the wrong speed?”
Those are very different faults and may require very different repairs.
Other Possible Causes of Mercedes P0716
Electrical faults can also distort the input speed signal.
Damaged wiring, terminal problems, poor electrical connections or contamination around the transmission connector may affect communication between the transmission electronics and the rest of the vehicle.
Low battery voltage or an unstable charging system should also be checked. Modern Mercedes transmission electronics depend on a stable electrical supply, and voltage problems can create misleading or intermittent control-module faults.
Fluid condition must be considered as well. Incorrect fluid level, heavily contaminated fluid or internal debris may indicate a hydraulic or mechanical problem rather than an isolated electronic fault.
Previous transmission repairs are also relevant. Incorrect assembly, disturbed wiring, connector damage, unsuitable replacement components or incomplete programming can all affect transmission operation and the quality of the data seen by the TCM.
Common Symptoms of Mercedes P0716
A Mercedes with P0716 may display different symptoms depending on whether the fault is electrical, hydraulic or mechanical.
Common customer complaints include:
Transmission entering limp mode
Harsh or delayed gear changes
Engine speed flaring during a shift
Transmission holding one gear
Vehicle starting in a higher gear
Reduced acceleration
Transmission warning displayed on the dashboard

Some vehicles may continue to drive normally for a period before the fault returns.
That does not mean the problem has corrected itself.

We then analyse live transmission data.
The most important values generally include:
Engine speed
Transmission input or turbine speed
Intermediate speed
Transmission output speed
Selected gear
Actual gear
Calculated gear ratio
Torque converter slip
Shift adaptations
Transmission temperature
We look at how these values relate to one another rather than judging one sensor in isolation.
If the input speed reading suddenly falls to an impossible value while engine speed, output speed and vehicle behaviour remain stable, an electronic or signal fault becomes more likely.
Yet, if input speed rises during a gear change and the vehicle experiences a genuine shift flare, the sensor may be accurately reporting clutch slip or incorrect hydraulic operation.
If the fault occurs only when hot, we consider temperature-related electronic failure, internal leakage, valve body wear and changes in clutch sealing.
If the fault appears after low-voltage events or battery problems, the electrical supply and charging system must be evaluated before transmission components are condemned.
We may also inspect the transmission fluid for deterioration, clutch material or metallic debris. Fluid condition cannot diagnose the entire transmission on its own, but it adds valuable evidence to the overall assessment.
A fault code starts the investigation. It does not complete it.
Mercedes P0716 Repair Options
The correct repair depends entirely on what testing reveals.
If the problem is caused by damaged wiring, poor connections or voltage instability, repairing the electrical fault may resolve P0716 without opening the transmission.
If the conductor plate is producing an inaccurate or implausible input speed signal, conductor plate replacement or specialist repair may be required. The correct programming, coding and adaptation procedures must then be completed for the specific vehicle and transmission.
If diagnosis identifies valve body wear or hydraulic pressure-control problems, the valve body may require repair or replacement.
If the transmission is genuinely slipping because of worn clutches, damaged seals or another internal mechanical fault, replacing the conductor plate alone will not correct the problem. Internal transmission repair may be required.
The objective is not to choose the most common repair.
The objective is to identify the repair supported by the evidence.
Can You Continue Driving with Mercedes P0716?
The vehicle may remain driveable, but P0716 should not be ignored.
If the problem is an inaccurate sensor signal, the TCM may no longer be able to control and verify shifts correctly.
If the speed reading is accurate and the code is being caused by genuine clutch slip, continuing to drive may generate additional heat and clutch debris, turning a limited repair into more extensive transmission damage.
